Family stories in their voice

Need a hand?

Answers to common questions are below. If yours isn’t, email k.fitzgerald310@gmail.com with your device model and iOS or iPadOS version.

Getting started

How does it work?

The organizer starts a book for someone (a parent or grandparent, the storyteller), picks or writes questions and chooses when they go out. The storyteller answers out loud on their own iPhone or iPad. The recording arrives on the organizer’s device through iCloud, is transcribed there, and becomes part of the book.

How does the storyteller join?

In the Family tab, tap Invite and send the link by Messages or Mail. Give the storyteller permission to make changes, so they can send answers. They tap the link on their iPhone or iPad, signed in to iCloud; it opens Story Week (free for them) and joins the book. They choose I’m the storyteller.

What if they don’t have an iPhone or iPad?

Record in person on yours. On the Questions tab, tap Record in person and choose a question. It’s good for a visit or a holiday, and the stories go into the same book.

iCloud and sharing

Why doesn’t a new story show up?

Both devices need to be online and signed in to iCloud, with iCloud allowed for Story Week in the Settings app. A story waits on the storyteller’s device until it can send; if the organizer’s iCloud storage is full, it waits until there’s room. Opening Story Week checks for new stories right away.

Can family on Android join?

No. Sharing uses Apple’s iCloud, so everyone who joins needs an iPhone or iPad. You can still record them in person on yours.

How much iCloud storage does it use?

About 20 MB for each hour of recordings, plus photos, in the organizer’s iCloud.

How do I stop sharing?

In the Family tab, tap Stop sharing. Everyone else loses access; the book stays with you. Deleting the book in Settings removes it from your iCloud for everyone.

Transcripts and the book

A transcript got a name wrong.

Open the story, tap Edit, and use Fix a name everywhere to correct it in every story. Your edits are kept apart from the machine transcript and always win.

How do I get a printed book?

With Pro, open the Book tab, choose 6 × 9 in, and save the interior and cover PDFs. Upload them to Lulu or Blurb (the Book tab has step-by-step instructions), or print at home with AirPrint in US Letter or A4. You order and pay the printer directly.

The printer says the spine is a different width.

Enter the printer’s spine width in Title, dedication and layout and save the cover PDF again.

Story Week Pro

What’s free and what’s Pro?

Free: setting up a book, recording, transcripts, the in-person interview and the first 3 questions. Pro, a one-time purchase on the organizer’s device, adds unlimited questions, the whole family, a book for each storyteller, and saving, sharing and printing the book PDFs. The storyteller never pays. Family Sharing is included, and there’s no subscription.

Purchases

How do I get a refund?

Apple handles App Store refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Do I have to pay again on another iPhone or iPad?

No. Sign in with the same Apple Account, open Settings in the app and tap Restore Purchase.
