Testing
Why can’t Resale Ready check Activation Lock for me?
macOS doesn’t let apps read it. Hold Option, choose Apple menu › System Information, and look under Hardware: Activation Lock Status should read Disabled. Then tell Resale Ready what it showed. If it says Enabled, the seller needs to turn off Find My and sign out of their Apple Account.
Some keys don’t light up.
macOS keeps a few keys for itself: Touch ID or the power key, and the top row’s brightness, volume and media keys unless you hold fn (🌐). Hold fn for F1–F12. If a key still doesn’t reach the app (F11 shows the desktop, for example), check that it works, then click it on the diagram to tick it by hand. Touch ID, the special keys and the backlight have their own checks by hand.
How do I stop the keyboard test?
Press Esc twice in a row, or click Stop. While the test runs, keys are only tested, so shortcuts like ⌘Q don’t do anything.
The trackpad test doesn’t react.
Keep the pointer over the gray test area while you touch the trackpad. Touches count only there.
How does the USB port test work?
Set how many ports the Mac has. Plug a USB device (a flash drive or mouse, not just a charger) into the port that’s highlighted; when it shows up, that port is ticked and the next one is picked. Unplug it and move on. If nothing shows up, choose Nothing Shows Up.
Why does the storage size look smaller than the drive?
macOS keeps part of the drive for its startup and recovery parts, so a 256 GB drive shows about 245 GB. Resale Ready works out the size it was sold as and compares that with the sizes Apple offered for the model. It checks size only, not the drive’s health.
Does it test the battery?
Not yet. For now, mention the battery in your notes; on a MacBook, System Settings › Battery shows its health.
A microphone or camera test says access is off.
Turn on Resale Ready in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone (or Camera), then open the test again.
The report
How does a buyer know the report is real?
They don’t have to take its word for it. Every report has the Mac’s serial number, model ID and the test date and time, and ends with a check at pickup: open Resale Ready on that Mac, choose Check at Pickup, compare the serial number (also shown in About This Mac) and rerun the quick tests. It takes under two minutes and is free.
What does “Check by hand” mean?
Something the app can’t read or hear for itself, like Activation Lock, so a person looked and said what they saw. The report says which answers were given by hand.
Can I add my own notes?
Yes. Write marks, what’s in the box or anything else under Your notes on the Report page. Any test can also be marked “Not part of this sale” or given a problem note.
Resale Ready Pro
What does Pro add?
The condition report as a PDF or printout, copying the results as text, a history of your reports, and reports from more than one Mac in one history. It’s a one-time purchase that works with Family Sharing, with no subscription. Every test is free.
How do I keep reports for several Macs in one place?
On each Mac, choose Save Report File on the Report page. Then, on the Mac you keep them on, choose Add Report Files in History.
Purchases
How do I get a refund?
Apple handles App Store refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Do I have to pay again on another Mac?
No. Sign in to the App Store with the same Apple Account on your other Mac and download it from your purchases.
