Taking the photo

Why does someone else have to take it?

The US passport photo rules say to have someone else take your photo: no selfies. Stand about 2 feet in front of a plain white or off-white wall, in soft, even light. A helper holds the iPhone with the back camera, about 3 to 4 feet away, and taps Start helper mode.

What do the spoken cues check?

Distance, framing, the phone’s tilt, your head’s tilt and turn, open eyes, the light on your face and the wall behind you. Each cue says who it’s for: the helper, the person in the photo, or both. You can turn the voice, haptics and taking the photo by itself on or off in Settings. With VoiceOver on, VoiceOver reads the cues.

Can I take the photo when a check isn’t passing?

Yes. The shutter works at any time. The Checks screen then shows what to fix, so you can retake it.

What can’t the camera check?

Glasses, your expression, a hat or head covering, a uniform, headphones or earbuds, and whether the photo is sharp. After the photo, go through the checklist together. Tap the photo to open it full size, and zoom in to check the eyes are sharp.

It says there’s a shadow behind my head.

Step forward, away from the wall, and face the light evenly. Soft daylight from a window in front of you works well.

Does it work for babies and toddlers?

Best effort. Babies are often photographed lying down, where the phone-level check can’t pass. Take the photo whenever it looks right, and use the Checks screen and the checklist as a guide.

The photo rules

Who makes the final decision on my photo?

Passport Photo Coach checks your photo against the published US passport photo rules, but the U.S. Department of State makes the final decision, so acceptance is up to the government. The app isn’t affiliated with any government agency.

Why doesn’t it remove the background or retouch the photo?

Passport photos must not be changed with software, apps, filters or AI. The app only coaches the shot. The print sheet is cropped and scaled, nothing more, and the online renewal file is your original photo.

Which photos does it make?

US passport photos (2 × 2 in), for now.

Printing and online renewal

How do I print the photos?

With Pro, tick every checklist item and tap Print sheet (4 × 6 in). Print with AirPrint at actual size (100%) on 4 × 6 in photo paper, or save the sheet to Photos and print a 4 × 6 at a store photo kiosk. The bar at the bottom of the sheet should measure 1 inch; if it doesn’t, the sheet was scaled when it printed.

Which file do I upload to renew online?

With Pro, tap Online renewal file. It’s your original photo, byte for byte: not cropped, resized or recompressed. The online form has its own crop tool, so crop it there. The app checks it’s a JPEG between 54 KB and 10 MB.

Why is Print sheet greyed out?

Tick every checklist item first. If it’s still greyed out, no 2 × 2 crop fits the photo: retake it with more space around the head.

Passport Photo Coach Pro

What does Pro add?
