Getting started
How do I swap a file?
Make a key with New Key…, then drop a CSV or Excel file on the Swap tab (or click Choose File…). Check what each column holds in its header menu, click Review, and then Swap and Save… to save a copy with stand-ins.
What do stand-ins look like?
Names come from bundled lists, emails are at example.com, example.net or example.org (reserved domains that never deliver mail), US phone numbers are in the fictional 555-0100 to 555-0199 range, and street addresses and towns are made up while the state is kept. Each one keeps the format of the original.
Will the same person get the same stand-in?
Yes, every time you use the same key. With Pro, one key works across many files, so a customer has the same stand-in in every file and lookups still match.
Can I use a Numbers file?
Export it first: in Numbers, choose File › Export To › CSV or Excel.
Restoring
How do I get the real values back?
Open the Restore tab and drop in the file that came back. It works even if rows were sorted, added or edited, because Mask & Restore looks for the stand-ins in every cell. Then click Save Restored Copy….
Can I restore an AI’s reply?
With Pro, paste the reply into Restore pasted text and click Restore Text. Names, emails, phone numbers and street addresses come back as the real values.
I lost my key.
Without the key the real values can’t be put back; that’s what keeps them private. Use Export… on a key to keep a passphrase-protected backup.
Detection
Will it find every name?
Not always. Columns with a header like Name, Email, Phone or Address are handled as a whole, but names inside free text, like a notes column, can be missed. Review the list, add anything missed under Missed something?, and look through those columns before you share.
Does it change formulas in Excel?
No. Only the text of cells changes; formulas, formatting, column widths and every sheet stay as they were. Phone numbers stored as numbers aren’t changed, and Mask & Restore tells you when a column has them.
Mask & Restore Pro
What does Pro add?
Unlimited rows (the free version swaps up to 200), one key across many files, Excel workbooks and restoring pasted text. It’s a one-time purchase that works with Family Sharing, with no subscription.
Purchases
How do I get a refund?
Apple handles App Store refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Do I have to pay again on another Mac?
No. Sign in to the App Store with the same Apple Account on your other Mac and download it from your purchases.
