Mask & Restore

Privacy Policy

Effective September 29, 2026

The short version: Mask & Restore does not collect your data.

No accounts, ads, analytics or tracking, and nothing is sent to us.

This policy explains how Mask & Restore (“the app”), a Mac app that swaps the personal data in spreadsheets for stand-ins and restores it later, developed by Kevin Fitzgerald, handles information.

Information we collect

None. Mask & Restore does not collect, store, sell or share personal information on any server, and it does not include analytics, advertising, crash-reporting or tracking tools of any kind.

Information stored on your Mac

To work, the app keeps the following on your Mac only:

It stays in Mask & Restore’s own storage on your Mac and is never sent to us. Files you open are read only when you choose or drop them, and Mask & Restore writes only the copies you save.

Your files

Mask & Restore reads a CSV or Excel file only when you choose it or drop it on the window, and writes only the copies you save with the save panel. Your original file is never changed. Everything happens on your Mac.

Project keys

A key maps each real value to its stand-in, so it holds the real values. It is encrypted with AES-GCM and kept in Mask & Restore’s storage on your Mac. A Keychain key opens with a secret in your login Keychain; a passphrase key opens only with your passphrase, which Mask & Restore never stores. If you export a key, the copy is encrypted with a passphrase you choose. Deleting a key removes it and its Keychain secret; files swapped with it can’t be restored after that.

Pseudonymization

Stand-ins are pseudonymization: anyone with the key can restore the file, so the data is still personal data. Names inside free text can be missed, so look through notes columns before you share. Mask & Restore doesn’t make a file meet any regulation for you.

Network

Mask & Restore doesn’t connect to the internet. Purchases are handled by the Mac App Store.

Purchases

Mask & Restore is sold through Apple’s Mac App Store. Apple handles payment; we never see your payment details.

Children’s privacy

Because the app collects no personal information from anyone, it does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. If the app ever begins collecting data, this policy will be updated before that happens.
