Privacy Policy
No accounts, ads, analytics or tracking, and nothing is sent to us.
This policy explains how Pixel Caliper (“the app”), a Mac menu bar app for measuring things on screen, developed by Kevin Fitzgerald, handles information.
Information we collect
None. Pixel Caliper does not collect, store, sell or share personal information on any server, and it does not include analytics, advertising, crash-reporting or tracking tools of any kind.
Information stored on your Mac
To work, the app keeps the following on your Mac only:
- Your settings: units, edge tolerance, copy formats, whether the global shortcuts and the loupe are on, how guides are shown, and the ruler’s size, direction and position
- Your guides, so they’re where you left them
- The last 12 colors you picked
It stays in Pixel Caliper’s own storage on your Mac and is never sent to us. Measurements you keep on screen are forgotten when you quit.
Screen Recording
Edge snapping and its loupe (Pro) need macOS’s Screen Recording permission, which Pixel Caliper asks for when you turn edge snapping on, never at launch. While snapping is on, it reads one thin row and one thin column of pixels through the pointer, plus a tiny square around it for the loupe, to find edges and show colors. Its own ruler and guides are left out. Those pixels are handled in memory on your Mac and are never recorded, saved or sent anywhere; only a color you choose to pick is kept, in your recent colors. You can turn the permission off at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording (Screen Recording on macOS 14), and the ruler, guides and Pick Color keep working.
The pointer and shortcuts
Pixel Caliper follows the pointer only while the ruler, edge snapping or the guide editor is on. Its keyboard shortcuts are standard global shortcuts, so it never sees what you type in other apps. Neither needs Accessibility permission. Measurements and colors go to the clipboard only when you copy them.
Network
Pixel Caliper doesn’t connect to the internet. Purchases are handled by the Mac App Store.
Purchases
Pixel Caliper is sold through Apple’s Mac App Store. Apple handles payment; we never see your payment details.
Children’s privacy
Because the app collects no personal information from anyone, it does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. If the app ever begins collecting data, this policy will be updated before that happens.
