A font license audit for your Mac

Need a hand?

Answers to common questions are below. If yours isn’t, email k.fitzgerald310@gmail.com with your Mac model and macOS version.

Using FontWarden

What do the verdicts mean?

Restricted: the font’s own embedding bits forbid or limit embedding, or it came with macOS (licensed for use on Apple devices). Likely OK to embed: the font carries an open license such as the SIL OFL. Unknown: the font doesn’t say. Help › How FontWarden Decides explains the rules.

Does “Likely OK” mean I can use it?

Not by itself. FontWarden reads the font’s own data, which can be missing or wrong. Check the license you actually have; this isn’t legal advice.

Why does a PDF font show fewer details?

PDF writers often strip license fields from the fonts they embed. FontWarden matches each one to your installed fonts and added folders by name to fill them in; scan the folder with the fonts you used.

FontWarden Pro

What’s free, and what does Pro add?

Free: every installed font and added folder with its verdict and reasons. Pro adds Check a Document (PDFs), license notes per font, and CSV and PDF audits. It’s a one-time purchase on Gumroad, with no subscription.

Where do I enter my license key?

Choose FontWarden › License…, paste the key from your Gumroad receipt and click Activate.

How do I get updates?

FontWarden checks for updates on its own; you can also choose Check for Updates… from the FontWarden menu. Updates are free.

Purchases

How do I get a refund?

Gumroad handles payment. Reply to your Gumroad receipt or email k.fitzgerald310@gmail.com.

Do I have to pay again on another Mac?

No. One license key works on up to 3 of your Macs. Download the app again from your Gumroad receipt or library and enter the same key.
